Do You Know All There Is to Know About Static Pressure HVAC?

Static pressure in HVAC systems refers to the amount of resistance conditioned air encounters in your home’s ductwork. As cooled or heated air circulates from the blower fan and throughout the ducts, some static pressure in HVAC systems is always present. However, pressure that’s higher than a specified level can impair system airflow, reduce energy efficiency and inflict excess wear and tear on critical components.

Symptoms of High Static Pressure

  • Noisy ducts. A system with high static pressure often produces a noticeable roaring or whooshing sound as circulating air meets excessive resistance within enclosed ducts. Muffled rattling, banging, and other weird noises may also be noticed.
  • Uneven temperature control.  Excessive static pressure may cause certain rooms to receive more than enough cooling or heating, while other rooms don’t get enough.
  • Stress on system components. Certain parts of an HVAC system — namely, the AC compressor and the system blower fan — work harder because of excess static pressure and may require repair or replacement before the unit’s normal life expectancy expires.

Why Static Pressure’s Too High

  • Design and construction of ductwork. Where ductwork is not sized and installed for optimum efficiency, where the duct design incorporates an excessive number of bends and turns, or where later alterations, extensions, or repairs hinder airflow, increased static pressure will be the likely result.
  • Deteriorating ducts. Aging ducts that have partially collapsed or flexible ducts that have kinked over time are associated with higher static pressure.
  • Clogged air filter. It’s a simple explanation for high static pressure and simple to prevent. Replacing the system air filter monthly during cooling season and every other month during winter supports maximum airflow and helps keep static pressure low.
