Which HVAC Trends Should You Monitor During the Winter?

HVAC trends have come a long way since the introduction of single-room residential heating and air conditioning. Over the past 20 years, more than 91% of all new homes have been constructed with ductwork that’s pre-installed to accommodate a central furnace and air conditioner.

However, progress has definitely not stopped there. As we’ve entered the second decade of the 21st century, continuous research and development in the HVAC industry promises improved energy efficiency, greater convenience, and healthier indoor air quality.  Here are just a few examples of HVAC trends on the horizon.

Smarter Systems

Remote sensors that interact with intelligent central HVAC systems track indoor conditions throughout the house and automatically make adjustments according to specific requirements, including the total number of occupants. Data about temperature, humidity, and indoor air quality update smart thermostats that control heating and cooling, adjust humidity, and even actuate high-efficiency filtration.

Geothermal Rising

A geothermal system harvests latent heat only a few feet below the surface of the Earth to heat the home in winter. The system utilizes an underground heat-exchange tubing grid connected to an efficient heat pump to extract warmth in winter. Heat extracted from the house by the air conditioner in summer is returned to the Earth by the same system. Latent heat in the Earth is free and continuous throughout all seasons without reliance on gas or electrical.

Breathing Easier

As houses continuously become more tightly sealed and efficient, concern about indoor air quality comes to the forefront for homeowners. Research into air-purification science continues to evolve existing technology, including bipolar ionization, ultraviolet air treatment, and high-efficiency filtration to neutralize bacteria and viruses in the air.
