What to Know About a Possible HVAC Compressor Replacement

If you’re confronted by a potential HVAC compressor replacement, what are the best options? The compressor is the heart of your central air-conditioning system. It compresses the flow of refrigerant in order to efficiently convey heat extracted from inside the home, which is then dispersed into the air outside.

Compressors in modern air conditioners are generally a component with a long expected service life. However, in some circumstances, a compressor may fail sooner than other components in the system. Inspection and testing by a qualified HVAC contractor is required in order to diagnose a defective compressor. If it turns out that the unit is not fully functional, here are some issues to consider:

  • Can it be fixed? In some limited cases, a compressor may simply need a part which can be installed at an affordable cost. However, it’s worthwhile to remember that parts of a unit typically have similar expected life spans. Therefore, the compressor may soon require additional repairs/replacement in the near future as other parts become marginal.
  • Is it still under warranty? If the system warranty is still valid, HVAC compressor replacement alone is usually a good choice, assuming other parts of the system are still fully functional and you are satisfied with overall cooling performance and efficiency.
  • What if the warranty has expired? Two factors should be considered. You may opt for HVAC compressor replacement alone, which will incur a significant expense. Still, if resources are limited, this may be the best choice when measured against the cost of replacing the entire central AC.  Given the high cost of replacing the compressor alone, however, it may be worthwhile to consider replacing the entire system now if your finances permit. You’ll get improved cooling, better energy efficiency and reduced monthly operating costs.  And, of course, you’ll also get a new warranty that comes with years of coverage.

The cooling professionals at Paitson Bros. are ready to advise you about options for HVAC compressor replacement. For almost a century now, we’ve been Terre Haute’s trusted source for HVAC advice, sales, and service.
