Is Your AC Not Blowing Air? Here’s How to Handle It.

It’s a hot, sultry, Indiana summer afternoon and you have an AC not blowing air. What else can go wrong? The good news is, the most common causes of this uncomfortable situation can usually be quickly diagnosed and resolved by a qualified HVAC service technician.  In some cases, you may even be able to get air flowing again by yourself. If an AC not blowing air is ruining your day, here are some steps to help diagnose the problem.

  • Check the thermostat. There’s a chance you might be able to get an AC not blowing air running again yourself. First, verify that the thermostat is set to “Cooling” mode (not “Off”).  Then, check the programmed thermostat temperature setting and make sure it’s in the proper range to turn on the system and provide cooling.
  • Check the air filter. This is another issue that may be resolved by a quick check. If the HVAC air filter is severely clogged, installing a new filter and restarting the system may restore proper airflow. During the cooling season, the air filter should be replaced monthly.
  • Ice formation. Ice forming on the indoor AC evaporator coil gradually restricts system airflow and may eventually trigger an automatic system shutdown. Coil-ice formation may be caused by issues including low refrigerant charge or a defective compressor. These issues require the attention of a professional HVAC service technician.
  • Blower defects. The system blower that circulates air throughout the house can fail in two ways: The motor may be defective or the belt that drives the blower pulley may have broken. Call for qualified service to check this out and make necessary repairs.
  • Tripped circuit breaker. A circuit breaker that shuts off due to some electrical issue can terminate power to all central AC functions. This usually requires professional help to find out what is causing the overload.
