Energy Efficient AC Motors Are Key for Your HVAC System

Energy efficient AC motors not only save money on monthly operating costs, they keep home comfort more consistent throughout the entire house. A typical central air-conditioning system incorporates two motors that serve different but very critical functions.

  • The blower fan motor located in the indoor air handler circulates air cooled by the AC throughout the ductwork inside the house.
  • The air-conditioner compressor motor located in the outdoor AC unit compresses refrigerant that extracts indoor heat and releases it into the outside air.

Energy efficient AC motors are an improvement over standard motors in a major way. These newer alternatives operate across a variable output speed range which can be controlled by signals from the system. In addition to reduced electrical consumption, energy efficient AC motors put less wear and tear on various system components.

Here’s how upgrading to energy efficient AC motors reduces costs while improving the performance of your cooling system:

  • Variable-speed blower fan. A traditional HVAC blower has two speeds: on and off. This means your air-conditioner fan delivers maximum air volume to your home when the system cycles on, then zero air volume when it’s off. This all-or-nothing approach often means noticeable temperature swings throughout the house. Variable-speed AC motors use less electricity and allow air volume and temperature to be controlled more accurately.
  • Variable-speed compressor. The motor in a single-speed air-conditioner compressor runs at a fixed 100% output at all times when the system cycles on, regardless of the changing cooling load. A variable-speed compressor runs continuously but constantly adjusts output to the changing cooling requirements. In addition to more accurate indoor comfort control, the energy efficient AC motors in variable-speed compressors actually consume less electricity than traditional single-speed units.
