These Are the HVAC Apps to Run in Sync with Your System

HVAC apps put comfort control in your hands and connect you to your home’s heating and cooling system from anywhere in the world. Apps are very specialized software applications designed for usage on portable devices like smartphones and tablets. HVAC apps remotely link to your Wi-Fi-connected programmable thermostat to provide remote monitoring and control of the furnace and air conditioner.

As these programs are limited to very specific functions, most HVAC apps are user-friendly and easy to get the hang of. Typical remote functions provided by HVAC apps include:

  • Household monitoring. You’re always in touch with your home’s indoor environment. Most apps provide instant information about current indoor temperature and humidity.
  • Thermostat setting and schedule changes. If you wish to alter programmed temperatures while you’re away — maybe you’re returning earlier than planned and want to adjust the temperature for when you arrive — you can alter all thermostat settings remotely via the app. If desired, you can turn the entire HVAC system completely on or off.
  • Malfunction alerts. If some technical problem — such as a component failure or a power outage — affects the HVAC system, or other irregularities such as indoor temperature extremes occur, the app will notify you immediately with a text or email.
  • Maintenance reminders. Are you overdue for a system air filter change? Or, maybe it’s time to schedule annual preventative maintenance. HVAC apps will remind you about what’s required to keep the system at optimum efficiency and performance.

Sources for HVAC Apps

Major manufacturers. Many leading HVAC manufacturers now include dedicated apps with the installation of a new system and thermostat.  HVAC components of the Lennox iComfort system, for example, integrate full functionality utilizing the system’s Wi-Fi thermostat and iComfort mobile app.

Third-party options. Many manufacturers of Wi-Fi thermostats also include apps with certain models.  In some cases, these are part of more extensive smarthome systems that offer remote control and monitoring of a variety of house functions. These include Nexia, Ecobee, Nest, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and others.
