Space Heaters and Mini Heaters Are Handy; If You Use Them Correctly

While efficient central heating is a definite necessity in cold weather, economical space and mini heaters have filled a gap by providing fast, temporary heating in a limited area. These units are portable and can be taken along to warm one or a few persons in small spaces that might otherwise be chilly.

The term space heater generally refers to units that are placed on the floor and plugged into a standard AC outlet. They may keep a small group of people comfortable in a limited space. Mini heaters, sometimes known as desktop heaters, are smaller and warm one person only. These units — powered by standard AC, batteries, or a USB connection — typically utilize ceramic heating elements or infrared bulbs and may be placed on a desktop or a counter.

Here are a few safety tips for using space and mini heaters this winter:

  • Space heaters require space. Place space heaters — with at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides — away from flammable materials such as papers, curtains, beds, and sofas.
  • Make sure any space and mini heaters you utilize includes two vital safety features: A “tip over” safety switch that switches the unit off if it turns over, as well as overheating protection that turns it off if it exceeds safe temperatures for any reason.
  • Don’t use extension cords or power strips with space heaters. Units that draw a lot of power may overheat common extension cords and cause a fire.
  • Don’t leave space and mini heaters on all night or for periods when you are out of the room.
  • Check for safety certifications before buying. The safety of portable heaters is specifically indicated by NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) certification. This indicates that the unit has been tested and certified to meet the unique safety standards of portable heaters.

Stay both comfortable and safe this winter. Ask the heating professionals at Paitson Bros. for more information about safely operating space and mini heaters. We’ve been keeping Terre Haute customers warm every winter since 1922.
