It’s Spring! Prepare Your HVAC

It's Spring! Prepare Your HVACWith spring on the doorstep, now’s the time to prepare your HVAC for the approaching cooling season. Doing so before the heat and humidity arrive ensures your HVAC will run reliably and efficiently, and provide maximum comfort throughout the summer.

Here are some essential spring HVAC tasks to tackle:

Put in a New Air Filter

Putting in a new air filter before you switch the HVAC over to cooling helps to maintain the vital system airflow that keeps your equipment running smoothly. Throughout the summer, examine the filter once a month, and replace it when there’s any collected debris, or at least every three months.

Clean Around the Outdoor Unit

Cleaning up the area around your outdoor unit helps guarantee ample airflow through the condenser coil for efficient heat transfer. There should be two feet of clearance on all sides of the unit, so rake up and dispose of any surrounding dead vegetation, and trim back nearby landscape plantings.

Have the Ductwork Checked

You can waste up to one third of your HVAC system’s conditioned air output if your home’s ductwork is damaged, leaky or poorly insulated. You can make cooling more efficient and boost your home comfort this summer by having the ductwork inspected, repaired if necessary, then properly sealed and insulated.

Reassess Your Thermostat

If you have a programmable thermostat, the heating-to-cooling transition means it’s time to reassess your temperature settings/setback periods to reap the greatest summer energy savings. If you’re still using a manual or digital unit, it’s well worth replacing it with a programmable model that matches your HVAC equipment and usual weekly schedule – according to the Department of Energy, going programmable can trim your energy bills by about 10 percent annually.

Schedule HVAC Maintenance

Having your cooling system serviced in the spring ensures it’s in the best possible operating condition for the summer. With regular maintenance, you’ll also preserve your system’s efficiency, extend its useful lifespan, and increase its reliability to reduce the likelihood of inconvenient mid-season equipment breakdowns.
