Key HVAC Products for High-Tech Month

Key HVAC Products for High-Tech MonthKeeping up with future HVAC products is a moving target—the future’s arriving faster all the time. New technology is continuously integrated into home heating, cooling and air quality systems and the pace of advancement seems likely to accelerate. Since January is officially designated “High Tech Month” we thought we’d take the opportunity to point out a few HVAC products now in research and development that may make the future more comfortable, efficient and affordable.

Motion Sensing Air Conditioning

The concept itself isn’t new. However, advanced sensor technology now developed by MIT can activate air conditioners to provide cooling only to occupied rooms, plus detect the number of persons in order to determine a specific room’s cooling load. The motion-sensing system also “learns” daily habitation patterns and anticipates temperature requirements. In the future, systems like this will reduce energy wasted by cooling unoccupied or infrequently-used rooms.

Variable Refrigerant Flow

Refrigerant flowing through a coil can extract heat to cool rooms like an air conditioner or radiate warmth like a heat pump. Ductless variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems that can do both simultaneously are on the leading edge of HVAC tech. Due to variations in sun exposure, indoor comfort can be fine-tuned by heating certain rooms while also cooling other rooms at the same time. Central VRF systems that simultaneously provide both heating and cooling on-demand to different rooms help make indoor comfort more consistent.

Devap Air Conditioners

Dry air is cooler. This basic principle is amplified in a process that produces a cool indoor environment by evaporation—rather than by extracting heat with compressed refrigerant like conventional air conditioners. Called “a revolutionary technology” by the U.S. Department of Energy, devap A/C units now on the drawing board incorporate liquified desiccants to super-dry the air, then an evaporative cooler stage that removes residual heat. Result: cool comfort in the future at a fraction of the energy costs of today’s air conditioners.
