What HVAC Resolutions to Commit to in the New Year

What HVAC Resolutions to Commit to in the New YearUnlike some of the promises we make to ourselves around the first of the year (and don’t always keep) HVAC resolutions can actually save you money and help keep the house more comfortable all year long. They don’t take a lot of grueling willpower, either—like maintaining that strict diet and exercise regimen for a whole year.

Here are three practical HVAC resolutions to put at the top of the list as the calendar flips to 2019.

Schedule Professional Preventive Maintenance

Annual maintenance and inspection by a qualified HVAC service technician keeps heating and cooling systems running up to specs. This saves money in monthly operating costs and reduces the wear and tear on the system, extending component life. A thorough inspection may also turn up minor issues before they become a major system failure later.

Change The Filters

One of the most critical specifications in your HVAC system is proper airflow. The most common reason for sub-standard airflow that causes poor performance and higher operating costs is a dirty filter. Changing it regularly is an easy DIY procedure that pays off all year long. During winter, check the filter every month for dust accumulation and change it at least every other month. During summer air conditioning season, monthly changes are advised.

Upgrade The Thermostat

Still hanging on to that old-school manual thermostat? Donate it to the thermostat museum and install a digital programmable model, instead. These units make heating and cooling temperature adjustments for you, according to schedules you program yourself. In addition to comfort and convenience, automating temperature changes saves money because systems run more efficiently when temperatures are consistent over longer periods versus frequent manual thermostat changes.

Check The Detectors

Make sure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in the house are tested monthly by pressing the “Test” button on the front of the unit. Battery-operated units, and those with battery backup, should get new batteries at least once and preferably twice a year.
