Kick These Bad HVAC Habits

Kick These Bad HVAC HabitsAre your bad HVAC habits causing higher monthly operating costs, making the house less comfortable and embarrassing the entire family? Time to confess and change your ways. Like most behavior patterns, kicking bad HVAC habits requires a bit of extra awareness.

Here are some specific areas where it pays to think before you act:

Compulsive thermostat fine-tuning.

Constantly tweaking the thermostat setting is an energy-waster. It results in erratic on/off cycles of the furnace or air conditioner. HVAC systems operate most efficiently when the cycles are consistent and components run for the optimum duration. Also, continuously adjusting the thermostat doesn’t cool or heat the house any faster than a steady setting.

Closing registers in rooms.

A furnace or air conditioner doesn’t know whether registers in your house are opened or closed. These units simply produce the same amount of conditioned air—and consume the same amount of energy— to meet thermostat settings, regardless of the status of individual registers. What closing registers can do, however, is unbalance airflow throughout the entire system, causing certain rooms to be overly warm while others are too cool.

Poor filter hygiene.

Just because a dirty air filter is hidden inside the HVAC return duct, it won’t stay a secret forever. A clogged filter obstructs system airflow, one of the most critical factors in efficient heating and cooling. Monthly bills rise, comfort level plummets, indoor air quality stagnates. Expensive system components incur excessive wear and tear. Install a new quality pleated air filter every other month during heating season and every month when the A/C is running.

Doing it yourself.

For everything but changing the filter, don’t do it yourself. With today’s complex heating and cooling systems, DIY repairs are false economy. They often trigger even worse issues that ultimately require repair by HVAC professionals with the training, professional expertise and specialized equipment to do the job right. What’s worse, DIY handiwork may violate manufacturer’s warranty terms and leave you stuck with the entire bill.
