Benefits of Movement-Activated Air Conditioning

Benefits of Movement-Activated Air ConditioningA new generation of smart air conditioners knows that occupied rooms need more cooling than empty rooms. Light fixtures that incorporate motion-sensing technology are nothing new—automatically turning lights on and off as people come and go is a no-brainer for saving energy.

With the rising popularity of efficient ductless mini-split systems that cool single rooms, systems with motion detecting sensors that control A/C functions in individual spaces are also in the pipeline.

Smart Air Conditioners Effectiveness

Cooling when people are present to enjoy it makes more sense than paying high energy costs to keep empty rooms in the comfort zone. Here’s how smart air conditioners can make the indoor environment more efficient and convenient by cooling rooms only when they’re occupied:

A passive infrared or acoustic motion detector installed in the ceiling of the room detects persons entering the room and also senses when all occupants have left.

As persons entering are detected by the motion detector, the mini-split heat pump compressor shifts into high output to rapidly bring the room temperature down to the “Occupied” level pre-programmed into the system’s thermostat. Once that setting has been reached, the variable-speed compressor drops to energy-saving lower output to maintain that comfortable room temperature with precise accuracy.

When everyone has left the room and motion is no longer detected, the sensor signals the thermostat to revert back to the higher “Unoccupied” temperature, remaining at that level until persons again enter the room. This higher setting conserves energy and reduces cooling costs.

A smart system also takes into account variables such as time of day. For example, during overnight spans when persons in a bedroom are sleeping and not moving about, the system overrides the motion-detection function and maintains a preset sleeping temperature. Also, the mini-split’s wireless remote control may include a one-touch button to suspend motion-controlled operation at any time the user elects.
