Does Summer Affect IAQ?

Does Summer Affect IAQ?While indoor air quality is a concern at any time of year, summer IAQ presents season-specific issues inside the typical home. Poor indoor air quality can be a source of irritation and allergic responses; certain chronic illnesses like asthma are also believed to be linked to indoor pollutants. Because at least 2/3 of the breaths you take in an average day are inside your house, indoor air quality often has a greater impact on comfort and health than air quality in the great outdoors.

Here are three season-specific summer IAQ issues to be aware of:

Pollen Counts

In summer, the pollen count soars and may infiltrate indoors to levels that trigger symptoms in some folks. Because there’s no practical way to keep microscopic airborne pollen out of a house, the best option is effective indoor air filtration. Install a quality pleated HVAC air filter with a MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating of 8 to 12 to capture pollen spores. Replace the filter monthly all summer long.

Spores Activate

Humidity here in western Indiana is a factor every summer. Airborne mold spores are ubiquitous but remain dormant until activated by exposure to moisture including high humidity. Active airborne spores released by growing mold are toxic to many persons. Inhibit mold growth by limiting household humidity to no higher than 50%. Since humidity reduction is an air conditioning function, make sure your A/C is operating up to specs by getting annual preventive maintenance and changing the air filter regularly. If humidity issues persist, consider installing a whole-house dehumdifier to lower humidity permanently.

Indoor Air Stagnates

Stale indoor air due to insufficient ventilation is another summer air quality issue as homes are often enclosed to conserve air conditioning, 24/7. Newer options such as a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) extract heat from outdoor air to preserve indoor cooling while distributing filtered, fresh-air ventilation to all parts of the house.
