Managing Humidity Levels Year-Round

Managing Humidity Levels Year-RoundSuccessfully managing humidity levels is directly related to balancing indoor and outdoor conditions. The numbers tell the story. Average daily outdoor humidity here in Terre Haute nearly always exceeds 60%, even during spring months. On muggy summer days, we all know well that afternoon levels will rise even higher than that.

For optimum comfort and a healthy environment, however, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends maintaining indoor humidity at no higher than 50%. Managing humidity levels inside our homes, therefore, usually means focusing on effective humidity reduction.

When Humidity Is Too High

First, the comfort issue: overly humid houses are hard to cool in summer and also tend to feel clammy and chronically chilly during winter. Health concerns also play a role. Dormant mold spores are triggered into the active phase when humidity rises above 50%. Active growing mold inside a house is linked to allergic reactions and chronic illness in susceptible individuals. High indoor humidity also supports other allergens like airborne dust mites, mildew and bacteria growth.

Managing Humidity Levels

  • Make sure the house is well-sealed to limit infiltration of humid outdoor air as much as possible. Structural cracks and gaps that leak air should be pinpointed, then caulked or patched. Door and window weatherstripping should be renewed when worn out.
  • In summer, your air conditioner’s dehumidifying function is an important ally to keep indoor humidity in the recommended range. To ensure that the unit is operating at maximum effictiveness, schedule annual A/C preventive maintenance in spring, before hot summer weather arrives.
  • Install exhaust fans in rooms that contribute humidity to the indoor environment including bathrooms and the kitchen.
  • Consider a whole-house dehumidifier that extracts water vapor from all the air in your home as it circulates through the HVAC ductwork. Desired indoor humidity settings can be input on a digital humidistat and the system will maintain that level automatically, 24 hours a day.
