How to Describe Your Problem to HVAC Pros

How to Describe Your Problem to HVAC ProsWhen its time to call in HVAC pros to diagnose and resolve a problem, what information should you be prepared to supply?

If it’s your first contact with the firm, make sure you’re dealing with established, certified professionals who have a good track record in the community. If time permits, ask for a few local references—any reputable HVAC contractor is happy to provide them. Once you’re certain you’ll be dealing with a respected, qualified outfit, here are some questions to ask yourself in order to accurately describe the problem.

Is this a heating or a cooling issue?

Usually an HVAC problem will be specific to either the furnace or to the air conditioner. In some cases, however— a malfunctioning thermostat is a good example—the problem may occur whether you are in heating mode or cooling mode.

How old is the unit?

If you know, that’s helpful info to provide up-front. If you don’t know, any qualified HVAC service tech can trace the make and model numbers to determine the age, if necessary.

Is this a new problem or a recurrent one?

Many people understandably put up with minor glitches until they become major issues. If the problem has an extended history it’s helpful to know how long it has persisted and under what circumstances it was first noticed.

Has the HVAC system received regular maintenance?

This includes routine air filter replacement, a monthly or semi-monthly task that homeowners can do themselves. It also includes annual preventive maintenance performed by a qualified HVAC service technician. This more comprehensive professional procedure helps identify small issues that may become big problems later.

Have you noticed other changes such as higher operating costs?

Declines in energy efficiency and resultant increased monthly bills are frequently signs of wear and tear on HVAC components. It could also indicate problems in ancillary HVAC systems such as leaky ductwork.
