Reduce Your Energy Bills with Summer Savings

Reduce Your Energy Bills with Summer SavingsSummer savings by reducing energy costs can add up to a substantial monthly bonus. In summer, electricity moves to the forefront as the biggest energy expense in the house. That’s almost entirely because the largest power-consuming appliance in most homes is the air conditioner. The takeaway is clear: cooling more efficiently and effectively provides measurable summer savings in the form of lower monthly energy costs.

Even better news, the steps you take to cut energy use can also improve comfort during hot months. Here are a few simple changes to make:

  • Change the air conditioner filter every month. A clogged, dirty filter means longer air conditioner cycles and more electrical consumption. Since an A/C unit tends to run more hours in summer than a furnace does in winter, daily airflow through the filter is greater. A new air filter should be installed monthly without exception.
  • Seal air leaks. All winter long, heat energy has been trying to escape from your house. Now, it’s trying to get back in. Renew worn or missing weatherstripping around doors and windows. Arm yourself with a caulking gun and seal leaks between wall joints and the joint between wall and ceiling, as well as around ceiling fixtures such as recessed lights. Outside look for openings in the exterior wall that allow heat into interior spaces and fill with caulking or expandable spray foam insulation.
  • Close blinds and drapes during the day. Radiant solar energy passes straight through window glass and heats indoor spaces. Your air conditioner runs more often and longer and energy bills go up. Window treatments block the sun and make a shaded interior more comfortable in daylight hours.
  • Get an annual check-up. Don’t go into summer with an air conditioner that hasn’t received annual tune-up and preventive maintenance from an qualified HVAC contractor. Coil cleaning, refrigerant measurement and tests of critical components like the compressor all contribute to increased energy savings and better cooling performance.
