HVAC Savings and Rebates

HVAC Savings and RebatesHVAC rebates are a win-win for both the local utility and the private homeowner. Providing incentives to purchase more energy-efficient HVAC equipment and install it in a home upgraded for greater efficiency reduces the load on the local natural gas and electrical supply. This in turn also cuts carbon emissions at power plants as well as from individual residences.

First, the hard facts: Most Federal rebates and tax credits for the purchase and installation of HVAC systems expired at the end of 2016. The sole exception is a tax credit on 30% of the cost of a new residential solar system. If you haven’t purchased other HVAC or energy efficiency upgrades as of January 1, 2017, there are now no Federal rebates or tax credits available. In addition, the state of Indiana currently offers no public-funded HVAC rebates or tax credits.

Now, the better news. Major utility companies serving Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley region still maintain active rebate programs to help homeowners upgrade HVAC equipment as well as make certain home efficiency improvements. Here’s what’s available from the private sector:

Duke Energy

  • Depending on the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating of a new central air conditioner or heat pump, homeowners can receive a rebate ranging up to $350. If the upgrade also includes exchanging the existing system blower motor for an efficient ECM motor, the rebate can increase to $460.
  • A rebate of up to $250 for upgrading attic insulation and air sealing the house.
  • For sealing leaky HVAC ductwork, consumers are eligible for a $100 rebate.

Vectren

  • A $250 rebate on purchase and installation of a standard efficiency gas-fired furnace. High-efficiency models above 97% AFUE qualify for a $300 rebate.
  • New central A/C units with SEER ratings of at least 16 get a $200 rebate while SEER 18 units qualify for $300.
  • Upgrading to an air-source heat pump qualifies for a rebate of $300 to $500 depending on SEER rating.
