Reasons to Clean Your Heat Vents

Reasons to Clean Your Heat VentsIs your home one of those that needs to have the heat vents cleaned? Not every house does. But the ones that do will benefit substantially from a professional inspection and, if the results warrant, a complete heat vent cleaning procedure.

It’s not hard to visualize how ductwork in a house accumulates dust, dirt and even more serious contaminants like toxic mold spores. In an average residential furnace system, at least 800 cubic feet per minute of air passes through the ducts, carrying with it both visible and invisible particulates that circulate into living spaces. A basic fiberglass system filter catches only some of those airborne particles; in that average home, about 40 pounds of dust and other particulates still infiltrates the indoor environment every year. In addition to obvious housekeeping issues, the consequences include higher incidence of allergic reactions, accelerated wear and tear on HVAC equipment and even increased heating costs — dust accumulation on furnace burner surfaces reduces system efficiency.

Ask yourself a few questions before deciding to have heat vents cleaned:

  • Is active mold growth suspected inside the ductwork? This should be confirmed by a professional inspection.
  • Are residents of the house experiencing allergy-like respiratory reactions? (Please discuss any physical symptoms or concerns with your physician, first.)
  • Is housekeeping a never-ending cycle of dusting followed by recurrence of dust on household surfaces?
  • Can you actually see dust and dirt emitted from vent openings when the system blower cycles on?
  • Have you had renovation or remodeling done inside the house recently?

Don’t rely on assumptions. Get a duct inspection from a qualified HVAC contractor. If a full inspection of the entire span of ductwork, as well as an evaluation of household air quality, indicates the presence of accumulated dust or other contaminants inside ducts, ask about options to have the system cleaned and about ways to prevent recurrence, including installing and changing quality, high-efficiency air filters and scheduling an annual furnace tune-up.
