Use the Whole HVAC System to Save Energy in Your Home

Use the Whole HVAC System to Save Energy in Your HomeOptimizing heating and cooling energy savings means going beyond the letters of the simple acronym “HVAC.” Heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment are part of the equation. However, a system comprises many diverse elements that interact for maximum energy savings—or not, as the case may be.

Here’s a quick tour through the various HVAC aspects that help enhance home efficiency, improve household comfort in all seasons and lower monthly operating costs.

Airtight Envelope

Small cracks and gaps allow passage of air and heat. This means diminished comfort and higher costs, winter and summer. Sealing air leaks in the home’s structural envelope with caulking is an inexpensive measure that delivers substantial efficiency payoff.

Efficient Windows And Doors

Renewing worn weatherstripping around windows and doors is another low-cost way to prevent heat loss and heat gain. A far more costly investment in energy-efficient dual-pane windows also reduces energy expenses, but the payback time span is very long.

Adequate Insulation

In winter, indoor heat radiates into the attic increasing heating costs. In summer, an overheated attic makes the A/C run longer and use more electricity. Ensuring that the total depth of attic insulation meets or exceeds current Department of Energy specs reduces movement of heat into and out of the attic.

Upgraded Equipment

Once an existing furnace or A/C has exceeded three-quarters of its service life—most have an average 15-year life expectancy—upgrading circumvents future repair expenses and allows you to benefit immediately from advanced energy-efficiency technology, as well as more consistent comfort.

Sealed Ductwork

Your HVAC ducts leak heated and cooled air—the only question is how much. A ductwork evaluation and pressure test by a qualified HVAC contractor can put an exact percentage to that leakage and suggest sealing options to restore efficiency.

Circulating Air

Alternatives to keep indoor air in motion, such as use of highly-efficient ceiling fans, reduce dependence on A/C in summer and circulate furnace heat more effectively in winter.
