Back-to-School Tips for the HVAC System in Your Home

Back-to-School Tips for the HVAC System in Your HomeBack-to-school is a transitional time for the household, as well as the household HVAC system. Patterns of daily occupancy are changing and fewer people may be home during the day. Outside, the weather will begin to morph from summer heat to cooler autumn evenings, slowly reducing A/C operating hours and eventually shifting into heating season. To get both the cooling and heating HVAC system ready for what’s next, here are a few suggestions:

  • If you expect fewer occupants during the day now that school’s in session, reset your programmable thermostat to adjust afternoon temperatures accordingly. You may be able to bump A/C settings up a few degrees during daytime hours and save energy.
  • Your air conditioner’s still running daily for now, so stay up with regular maintenance like changing the air filter every month. Also keep an eye on the condition of the outdoor A/C component: falling autumn leaves may accumulate on the top grill, obstructing air circulation. Clear away any weeds or other growth to maintain at least two feet of open space on all sides.
  • Check the condensate drip pan beneath the indoor A/C air handler to make sure it’s draining properly and not growing algae or mold. To disinfect the pan, make a 50/50 mix of household bleach and water in a jug and pour it into the drip pan. Verify that it drains out completely. If any standing water remains, call your HVAC contractor to troubleshoot the drain line. Definitely don’t shut the cooling system down for the winter with standing water in the drip pan.
  • Schedule an annual furnace tune-up. You had the air conditioner checked last spring, now it’s time for the furnace. A tune-up by a qualified HVAC service tech ensures that energy efficiency and heating performance, as well as safe operation, are up to manufacturer’s specs. It also includes a complete inspection to detect any developing issues that could turn into major malfunctions later in the season.
