What Do You Know About Two-Stage Cooling?

What Do You Know About Two-Stage Cooling?Two-stage cooling delivers more efficient and effective comfort to your household. A conventional, one-stage A/C compressor has a single output: 100 percent. For the same reason you don’t drive your car with the accelerator to the floor all the time, 100 percent output is not the most appropriate — or economic — cooling option most of the time. Once a house is cooled to the desired temperature, a standard A/C running at full output cycles on and off very frequently and indoor temperatures deviate widely. Frequent shorter cycles also mean the air conditioner’s humidity reduction function doesn’t work as well and the unit incurs more wear.

Two-stage cooling is better than one. A two-stage air conditioner incorporates a compressor that operates in dual cooling output modes: 100 percent or 67 percent. The system is programmed to utilize full output to quickly cool a warm house down to the thermostat setting, or for days of extreme warm temps. Once the indoor temperature is stabilized at the desired setting, the system automatically downshifts into lower-output mode and stays there as long as possible to maintain the precise temperature. Benefits of two-stage cooling include:

  • Lower operating costs. In lower output mode, the compressor uses commensurately less electricity for a more extended period of time. Your monthly cooling expenses drop accordingly.
  • Accurate temperature control. A two-stage system runs more continuously, avoiding the noticeable temperature swings of single-stage, on/off operation. Temperatures typically remain within a degree or two of the thermostat setting.
  • Better humidity reduction. Drier air cools faster and feels more comfortable. The extended cycles of a two-stage air conditioner enable the unit’s humidity extraction function to work more effectively and efficiently.
  • Decreased wear and tear. A one-state compressor that turns on and off frequently incurs more wear than a two-stage unit that runs more continuously in lower output. Longer expected service life of this expensive component is the result.
