Indicators of a Reputable, Reliable HVAC Company

Indicators of a Reputable, Reliable HVAC CompanyFirst, the bad news: Anybody can claim to be a qualified HVAC company in sales pitches and advertisements. Such outfits assume you’ll take their word for it and not insist upon verifiable evidence of professionalism and an established track record. Now, the better news. There are certain telltale signs that characterize a reputable qualified HVAC company and distinguish it from the incompetent and unreliable. Here are some indicators to look for — and red flags to avoid.

  • Local references in the community. Ask neighbors and friends about their experiences with certain contractors. You’ll probably hear positive things about companies you’re already familiar with and who have built an established reputation. Be skeptical of unknown upstarts that can’t produce a track record of satisfied customers.
  • Industry accreditation. Legitimate HVAC professionals maintain membership in professional organizations such as the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and employ technicians certified by NATE (North American Technician Excellence.) Most qualified contractors proudly display a sign or other indicator of accreditation.
  • Formal estimates in writing. A legitimate estimate should be fully itemized on printed company paperwork bearing the name, contact info, and logo. Estimates scribbled on a plain pad or, worse, verbal estimates with nothing in writing are signs of an outfit to avoid.
  • Scientific load calculations, not rough “guesstimates.” A standardized procedure to calculate the precise BTU capacity required to cool and heat your home should precede installation of any new HVAC equipment. Oversized or under-sized units aren’t a bargain — they waste energy and boost expenses.
  • Stays current on new technology. Instead of discouraging you from upgrading in order to sell marginal equipment with a high profit margin, an informed HVAC professional keeps abreast with the latest developments. He’s prepared to offer new advances that improve performance and efficiency while lowering costs.
