Ductless Systems are Great for Home Additions

Ductless Systems are Great for Home Additions | Paitson Bros.Adding an addition onto your home is a perfect opportunity to add a ductless system, too, to keep cool in summer and warm in winter. Of course, you have other options. You could extend your existing HVAC ductwork into the new addition — a formidable construction project and, after it’s over, you’re still faced with inherent downsides like air leakage and heat gain or loss from the ducts. Or, you could opt for a space heater and a window unit A/C — the old-school approach with performance, efficiency and aesthetic drawbacks. A ductless system solves the cooling and heating issue in a single efficient unit with minimal installation requirements.

The system consists of an compact outdoor heat pump unit and a sleek, low-profile indoor air handler integrating a coil and blower fan. The two units are linked by a narrow insulated conduit that circulates refrigerant between indoors and outdoors. Like any heat pump, the system provides all-season comfort: In summer it cools a single room or limited indoor space like an air conditioner; in winter mode it provides efficient, economical heat.

Other standout features of a ductless system include:

  • Location versatility. The suitcase-size outdoor unit can be placed behind or to either side of the house on the ground or attached to the house with brackets. The indoor air handler blends with a variety of decor and can be unobtrusively mounted on a wall, the ceiling or a floor stand.
  • Minimal installation. Installing the system is a very low-impact procedure, requiring only mounting the two individual units and routing the refrigerant conduit through a three-inch hole in an exterior wall. A couple of trained experienced installers can do the job in one day.
  • Dedicated thermostat. The ductless unit has its own hand-held remote thermostat to independently control temperatures in the new addition.
  • Expansion options. Additional rooms can be added on to the system: a single outdoor heat pump unit can accommodate up to five ductless indoor air handlers in separate living spaces.

Established in 1922, Paitson Bros. offers creative solutions like the ductless system to solve all your household cooling and heating needs.
