Maximize Air Conditioner Efficiency This Summer

Maximize Air Conditioner Efficiency This Summer | Paitson Bros.Air conditioner efficiency isn’t written in stone. Every unit has a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating that indicates maximum efficiency. In real-world scenarios, however, efficiency can fluctuate over time for many reasons. Any proactive steps you can take to maximize air conditioner efficiency represent a plus for both budget and home comfort An efficient air conditioner not only saves money with lower operating costs, it cools more effectively and consistently than an inefficient unit. Air conditioner efficiency and longer service life with fewer repairs are also closely related, as well.

Here are five things you can do to help your air conditioner maximize the efficiency it’s designed to deliver.

Get annual maintenance. Calculation of the SEER rating is based on the assumption that your A/C receives yearly preventive maintenance and complete inspection by an HVAC professional. The manufacturer’s warranty most likely requires it, too. Without regular maintenance, system wear and tear advances and efficiency declines.

Change the air filter monthly. The condition of your air filter condition and the efficiency of the air conditioner go hand in hand. When airflow declines due to a dirty filter, operating costs rise and cooling performance takes a hit.

Minimize attic heat. A broiling attic boosts temperatures in rooms below by up to 10 degrees. This extra heat load causes your A/C to run extended cycles to compensate, reducing energy efficiency and increasing wear and tear. Make sure your attic has adequate insulation and all attic vent openings are unobstructed to allow free flow of air.

Evaluate the ductwork. Leaky, deteriorating ducts constantly work against A/C efficiency. Get the system tested to determine the extent of leakage and, if necessary, have ducts sealed to meet local standards.

Let fans help. Air circulation provided by ceiling fans makes rooms feel cooler to occupants. This allows you to bump the A/C thermostat a few degrees higher without any effect on indoor comfort while also maximizing energy efficiency.
