Tips to Help You Remember to Change Your Air Filter

Tips to Help You Remember to Change Your Air FilterBesides scheduling annual A/C preventive maintenance from a qualified HVAC service provider, there’s one more thing to remember when it comes to air conditioner upkeep: change the air filter monthly. That one’s up to you. It’s a simple DIY task that takes only a few moments — if you don’t know how, the technician who performs the annual maintenance will be happy to show you — but it’s vital to the efficiency and performance of your air conditioner all summer long.

Unfortunately, we all have busy lives and changing an A/C air filter on schedule may not claim your undivided attention. It’s easy to forget and let it slide for a month or more. To avoid the higher cooling costs and diminished indoor comfort that result from a dirty filter, here are a few easy ways to remember.

  • Set an alarm on your smartphone or tablet for the first of every month (or some other convenient monthly date).
  • Associate changing the filter with some other critical monthly task you already tend to remember, such as bill-paying day, lawn maintenance, etc.
  • Purchase replacement filters by the dozen — they’re very cost-efficient that way — at a home center. Using a marker, clearly label the edge of each filter with its designated installation month. Place the box in a conspicuous location where you’ll see it regularly, like a utility room. This not only reminds you to make the change, but you can quickly see if you’ve missed any months, too.
  • Upgrade your thermostat to a Wi-Fi-enabled unit. These increasingly popular thermostats link to your home network and can be accessed via an internet connection. In addition to allowing you to remotely change household temperature settings and monitor the status of the cooling and heating system from your phone, laptop or tablet, a Wi-Fi thermostat can text or e-mail notifications including reminders of important recurrent maintenance like monthly filter changes.
