Why Air Balancing is Necessary

Why Air Balancing is NecessaryProper air balancing is often the “missing link” in achieving effective, efficient heating and cooling inside a home. Every HVAC system should be balanced to ensure that the correct volume of conditioned air reaches each room at the right temperature, no matter how far the room may be from the central unit. Air volume entering a room through the supply vent should also equal the amount taken out of the room through the return vent. When these things don’t happen, a number of bad things can occur.

  • Operating costs are higher — When air balance throughout the house is inconsistent, some rooms are always under-heated in winter or overly warm in summer. Constant thermostat adjustments to compensate make the furnace or A/C system run longer cycles. More energy is consumed and utility bills rise.
  • Comfort levels are lower — In an unbalanced house, it’s difficult to reach a happy medium, comfort-wise. Someone’s too cold while someone somewhere else complains about being uncomfortably hot.
  • Indoor air quality suffers — When the air balance in certain rooms tips toward negative, outdoor air is sucked into the room through cracks and gaps in the structure to equalize the pressure. This also draws in outdoor humidity, as well as unfiltered, perhaps contaminated air from areas like the attic or crawl space.

The air balancing process involves measuring the airflow into and out of each room using specialized technology, then adjusting to proper levels by opening or closing dampers installed inside the ductwork. Since the volume of airflow throughout the system is interdependent, altering the airflow into or out of one room necessarily affects balance in other rooms.

Achieving a consistent level throughout the entire system to maintain neutral air balance in each room is a delicate process. Other issues also influence proper airflow and must be addressed in the air balancing process as well, including duct leakage and the output of the system blower.
