A Zoning System Could Save You Energy and Money

A Zoning System Could Save You Energy and MoneyBecause indoor temperatures aren’t a one-size-fits-all matter, a zoning system accommodates multiple needs under one roof. In many houses, it’s hard to make a single central thermostat adapt to all occasions. If you bring the chilly downstairs den to a comfortable temperature on a winter day, for example, you’re probably overheating a sunny upstairs bedroom that’s not even occupied at the moment. Your furnace runs extended cycles, wasting energy and money as well as incurring extra wear and tear. Installing a zoning system enables multi-zone temperature control from a single furnace and air conditioner. Because you’re only heating or cooling rooms that actually need it—and only when the dedicated programmable thermostat in that zone asks for it—a simple zoning system can reduce costs by up to 30 percent.

Zoning systems customize distribution of heating and cooling through modifications to your existing ductwork. Motorized electric dampers installed inside ducts are operated by a central controller that receives signals from dedicated thermostats in each zone. Signals from each thermostat open and close the dampers, isolating the flow of heating or cooling to that zone only.

One House, Two Zones

A typical residential system might divide upstairs and downstairs into independent temperature zones. With the furnace or A/C cycled off, the default position for all dampers in the house is open. If the thermostat in zone A signals for heating, dampers leading to zone B close. The furnace cycles on and warm air flows into zone A only. No energy is wasted heating zone B. However, if the zone B thermostat subsequently signals for heat also, dampers leading to that zone open, too, and both zones receive warm airflow.

As the proper temperature in each zone is achieved, dampers to that individual zone close and the flow of warm air ceases. When all thermostats are at the desired setting, the furnace cycles off and all zone dampers revert to the open position.
