Should You Consider Ductless Mini Splits in Your Home?

Should You Consider Ductless Mini Splits in Your Home?Ductless mini splits are becoming more and more popular every year. For heating and cooling single rooms or enclosed spaces in an existing home, the efficiency of a ductless system is unmatched. Ductwork has always been the weak link in central heating and cooling efficiency and performance, subject to excessive leakage, thermal losses and often a source of dust and other allergens. Taking the duct out of home heating and cooling equation is why the ductless mini split has rapidly become the new standard for energy efficiency and comfort.

A ductless mini split integrates a low-profile indoor air handler with a powerful compact outdoor heat pump, linking the two units with a narrow conduit that circulates refrigerant. Because the unit conditions a single room only, temperatures can be fine-tuned with a dedicated thermostat. Ductless efficiency is unmatched and savings on heating and cooling typically average 30 percent or more. The heat pump also offers standout performance. Ductless units can maintain heating capacity in outdoor temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit and perform in cooling mode up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

Other reasons why ductless mini splits have swept the market include:

  • Straightforward installation. Installing new ductwork or extending existing ducts in a home is a major construction project involving substantial interior dismantling. Mini splits require only a single 3-inch hole in an exterior wall to accommodate the refrigerant conduit. A trained, two-person team can install a mini-split in one day.
  • Expandability. A single outdoor heat pump unit can accommodate up to five indoor air handlers in separate rooms, each controlled by dedicated thermostats to individualize comfort control.
  • Space-saving options. The indoor air handler can be wall- or ceiling-mounted or configured as a stand-up unit. Outdoors, the downsized heat pump component — no bigger than a suitcase — can be mounted at ground level or attached with brackets to the rear wall of the home.
