Tackle Hot and Cold Spots in Your Home Using These 3 Tips

Tackle Hot and Cold Spots in Your Home Using These 3 TipsHot and cold spots can make it feel like you’re living with multiple climate zones under the same roof. A quality, professionally-installed HVAC system should deliver consistent comfort to all living spaces in the house. When it doesn’t, here are some likely causes of hot and cold spots as well as how they may be resolved.

Thermostat Location

When a thermostat is subjected to a fluctuating temperature source, such as nearby cold drafts, it adjusts temperatures throughout the entire house to compensate for that nearby source. This may cause rooms far from the thermostat to be excessively hot or cold. The same holds when a single thermostat is located on an upper level. Because upstairs zones tend to be naturally warmer than downstairs, the thermostat adjusts downstairs temps too low, creating chilly spots. Your thermostat should be centrally located and not affected by nearby cold or hot sources. Where upstairs temperatures vary significantly, your HVAC contractor can discuss dividing the existing system into independent temperature zones with dedicated thermostats.

Closed Or Obstructed Vents

When supply vents can’t deliver heated or cooled air, that room becomes a cold or hot spot. Vents may be inadvertently obstructed by moving furniture or opening or closing drapes. Some homeowners deliberately close certain vents, believing it saves energy and lowers heating/cooling costs. Closing vents unbalances airflow throughout the entire system and may actually raise costs. To keep the system in balance as originally designed and prevent hot and cold spots, all vents to all rooms should be open all the time.

Duct Issues

Residential ductwork is notoriously leaky and typically loses about 20 percent of the cooled or heated air it conveys. Where airflow is insufficient because of leakage, temperatures in affected duct branches may vary widely from other parts of the house. Your HVAC contractor can pressure-test ductwork to determine the extent of leakage and offer professional solutions to seal ductwork.
