4 Key Steps in Every Professional A/C Installation

4 Key Steps in Every Professional A/C InstallationA professional A/C installation builds in the efficiency and performance you expect when you invest in a new air conditioner. Unfortunately, the opposite is also the case: An incompetent job means poor energy efficiency, and deficient cooling may be an ongoing fact of life. Industry standards for proper A/C installation are well-established and qualified HVAC technicians are trained and tested to verify the skills and knowledge to meet those criteria. Don’t settle for anything less than an A/C installation that includes these main components:

Size First

Before any air conditioner is installed, a cooling load calculation must be performed to match a unit with the correct capacity to the thermal characteristics of the house. Oversized units cycle on and off rapidly and never reach optimum cooling effectiveness, while undersized units run almost constantly, waste energy and wear out sooner. Utilizing professional load calculation software, an HVAC technician will arrive at the right figure to ensure manufacturer’s specifications for efficiency and performance.

Seal Duct Leaks

Don’t connect a new, high-tech air conditioner to aging ducts. Existing ductwork in homes often leaks as much as 25 percent or more of the conditioned air it’s supposed to distribute to living spaces. Many local codes now require an HVAC professional to pressure test ducts and seal leaks appropriately any time a new air conditioner or furnace is installed.

Balance Airflow

For optimum cooling, airflow volume in rooms furthest from the air handler should be the same as those rooms that are closest. By measuring airflow room by room and adjusting in-duct dampers, a professional installer will ensure neutral air balance at all points of the home.

Check Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the vital substance that moves heat energy extracted from your indoors and disperses it outdoors. The proper refrigerant level is an exact figure and a critical factor that can’t be taken for granted, even in a new unit. A competent installation includes measuring refrigerant levels during the install and verifying again after the unit has been test-run.
