Steps to Take When Hiring a Qualified HVAC Contractor

Steps to Take When Hiring a Qualified HVAC ContractorHiring a qualified HVAC contractor can be a daunting task. How do you know who’s qualified and who’s reputable? What criteria should a homeowner follow when selecting a contractor to install a new HVAC system?

Here are some pointers that will help guide you as you shop for a qualified HVAC contractor.

In recent years, as the complexity of HVAC systems and the level of education and expertise needed to work on them have increased, so has the importance of licensing service personnel to do the work of installation and repair.

The modern service professional must have a wide-ranging knowledge of and expertise in air conditioning and the use of refrigerants. An HVAC pro should also be familiar with ductwork and sheet metal fabrication, as well as ventilation and electronics.

Generally, for licensure, states require proof that the service professional has been through either an apprentice program with a business or has studied at a trade school. Most licensing requires some on-the-job experience as well.

Licensing of employees is important for the HVAC business proprietor, who may have to show a license, so that he or she can obtain insurance. Whenever you’re hiring an HVAC service company, make sure they’re licensed, insured and bonded.

One of the best ways to evaluate an HVAC company is through referrals. Ask for references and call them asking if the job was completed satisfactorily, within budget and on time.

Other Tips

Some other questions to ask, include:

  • Does the contractor carry the brand you need?
  • What experience does the contractor have with your brand?
  • What tax credits or rebates are available?
  • Will the contractor give you a written, detailed proposal based on a thorough evaluation of your home?
  • Will the contractor detail his or her responsibility for protecting your home, while the work is in progress?
