A NATE-certified technician arrives at your door fully prepared for the job of installing, maintaining or repairing your heating and cooling system. Unlike others who might make that same claim, however, the technician with NATE certification has the industry-backed credentials to prove it.
Meeting the Need
By the late 1990s, HVAC industry leaders realized that the increasingly complex technology incorporated in heating and cooling systems required installation and service by trained, qualified personnel only. A uniform testing program was needed to verify and certify the skills of field technicians who form the front line of the heating and cooling business.
What It Takes to Make It
Established in 1997, the NATE (North American Technician Excellence) program has now certified over 35,000 air conditioning and heating techs employed by more than 10,000 contractors in the U.S. and Canada. To receive and retain NATE certification, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Successful scores on two comprehensive examinations. One tests core knowledge and expertise in HVAC theory and practical techniques; the other exam relates to an installation or service specialty chosen by the technician.
- In order to qualify for recertification in two years, technicians must complete 16 hours of classroom education relating to their area of specialization.
How It Benefits You
For consumers, selecting contractors who hire NATE-certified technicians provides several benefits:
- Getting it right the first time. Trained, experienced service personnel bring the technical training and experience to do the job correctly without mistakes and makeovers that require callbacks.
- Reduced operating costs. Equipment that is professionally installed at the outset, then regularly maintained by trained technicians, runs more efficiently, lowers utility bills and lasts longer.
- Fulfills warranty requirements. Warranties supplied by most HVAC manufacturers stipulate that annual maintenance as well as repairs must be performed by qualified personnel.
- Reliable info and advice. NATE-certified technicians are up to date on the latest technology and fully versed in the operation of the equipment they service.
