Why It Is Important to Have a NATE-Certified HVAC Technician

Why It Is Important to Have a NATE-Certified HVAC TechnicianIf you’re thinking about contracting an HVAC technician who’s not North American Technician Excellence (NATE)-certified, think again. Today’s heating and cooling systems incorporate technology as sophisticated as any other appliance or equipment in your home. Your HVAC system also represents one of the largest household infrastructure investments you’ll ever make, second only to buying the home itself or making major renovations.

Any person who installs or works on that system should not have the necessary technical knowledge and hands-on expertise, he or she should be able to prove it. Polls show that 87 percent of consumers indicate a definite preference for certified technicians when their homes require maintenance or repairs on their heating and cooling systems. While just about anyone with a uniform, truck and tools can boast heating or cooling experience, the person holding the definitive credentials accepted throughout the HVAC industry is the NATE-certified technician.

Funded by the HVAC industry, NATE is a non-profit organization that tests and certifies field technicians, the front-line providers of HVAC installation and service. To earn certification, a technician must pass a rigorous examination in core knowledge of HVAC technology. In addition, he or she must choose one specialty area and pass a separate examination limited to that topic. After successful completion of the process, a NATE-certified technician must complete 60 hours of continuing education in his or her chosen area of specialization in order to be qualified for re-certification in another five years.

An HVAC contractor employing NATE-certified technicians for the majority of his workforce is authorized to display the NATE logo on signs, website and company literature. For the homeowner, the NATE logo offers these peace-of-mind benefits:

  • A job done right the first time, with fewer callbacks.
  • System performance that lives up to manufacturers’ promises.
  • Performance that meets SEER, AFUE and other technical or efficiency rating specifications.
  • Lower operating costs.
  • Informed advice about properly operating all facets of your system.
