Don’t Neglect Changing Air Filters This Spring

Don't Neglect Changing Air Filters This SpringChanging air filters regularly is a low-tech maintenance procedure that keeps today’s high-tech cooling and heating systems delivering optimum performance and efficiency. The most important parameter in a forced-air furnace or central air conditioner system is adequate airflow. Once airflow drops below design specs, a multitude of dysfunctions and operating shortfalls may occur. That’s why an HVAC technician simply checks the air filter first on a service call, before performing any more involved diagnostic procedure. Changing air filters regularly cools and heats the home more consistently, keeps operating costs low by saving energy, and reduces wear and tear on components because the system doesn’t have to work as hard or run extended “on” cycles to meet thermostat settings.

Healthy indoor air quality also partly relies of air filter condition. As the air volume of the home circulates through the ducts many times per day, the filter is the principle safeguard against a variety of airborne particulates and pollutants. Keeping a clean filter in your system keeps air clean in your living spaces.

With today’s complex systems, air filter changes are one of the only simple DIY maintenance items available to the average homeowner. The air filter slot is located where the return duct connects to the air handler. If you can’t find it, ask your HVAC contractor to demonstrate the process. From then on, it’s a simple matter to do it yourself:

  • Turn the system off at the thermostat.
  • Pull the old filter out of the filter slot.
  • Wipe the filter frame clean of accumulated dust or dirt with a rag.
  • Slide the new filter into place and restart the system.

Some manufacturers recommend changing air filters every three months. In many cases, monthly changes are a better way to ensure optimum performance and lowest operating costs. This is particularly true in these scenarios:

  • You run the system more than six months out of a typical year.
  • Your home has multiple occupants.
  • You own pets.
  • Anyone in the house suffers from allergies, asthma or other respiratory issues.
