A zoning system gives your home and family the freedom of choice that a single thermostat never allows. Many houses incorporate an assortment of temperatures and a variety of comfort preferences. Upstairs bedrooms may be overly warm while a tree-shaded den on a lower level tends to be chilly. As the daily range of indoor temperatures varies, in a multi-occupant home somebody somewhere’s almost always uncomfortable. Installing a zoning system gives you the flexibility of one or more additional thermostats to adjust temperatures to specific zones.
Zoning systems divide your home into independent temperature sectors, each with its own dedicated thermostat. Motorized dampers installed in your existing ductwork are operated by a central controller that receives input from all thermostats. The default position for all dampers is open. When the thermostat in Zone 1 signals for heating or cooling, the dampers in other zones close, and Zone 1 receives warm or cool air. If the thermostat in Zone 2 subsequently signals the controller also, dampers supplying air to that zone open, too. As each zone independently achieves the temperature setting on its dedicated thermostat, the controller slowly closes dampers in that zone.
Consider these five benefits of upgrading to a zoning system:
- More consistent comfort — The capability to customize temperatures to the preferences of certain occupants while leaving temperatures unchanged elsewhere makes a central system more flexible.
- Fewer temperature extremes — With independent zone control, over-cooling or over-heating rooms is eliminated.
- Energy savings — Because zoning allows you to direct heating/cooling to occupied areas only, you avoid the wasted expense of conditioning unused rooms.
- Extended system service life — Since your furnace or A/C serves independent zones on demand instead of the entire house, total operating hours, as well as system wear and tear, are reduced.
- Quieter operation — Overall air noise is reduced as airflow is restricted only to those zones requiring heating or cooling at any given time.
