Licensed, Bonded, Insured, NATE-Certified Technicians: The Only Option

Licensed, Bonded, Insured, NATE-Certified Technicians: The Only OptionMaking sure your contractor hires NATE-certified technicians also ensures you’re not getting an amateur to do a professional’s job. Heating and cooling installation and service is not the field for on-the-job training. The complexity of today’s units and the advanced technology involved means you need service technicians with training to match. Some very important issues including the energy-efficiency and performance of your system and, most of all, your family’s safety are in the hands of the people you allow into your home to install or repair a furnace or air conditioner. While anyone might claim to be qualified for the job, only NATE-certified technicians can prove it.

Founded in 1997, North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is a non-profit organization funded by the HVAC industry that tests and certifies heating and cooling field technicians. More than 30,000 NATE-certified technicians are now on the job across the country, employed by many heating and cooling contractors in your local area.

To earn NATE certification, candidates must demonstrate a high-level of both technical expertise and hands-on ability by passing two rigorous written examinations. The core exam covers general and specific knowledge in these areas:

  • Safety
  • Tools
  • Basic HVAC science and theory
  • Construction aspects
  • Achieving optimum performance and efficiency
  • Temperature and humidity measurement
  • Basic electronics.

A specialty exam following the core exam tests knowledge in a chosen area of HVAC technology such as  heat pumps or geothermal system. A NATE certification lasts two years. To be eligible for re-certification at the end of that period, the technician must also have completed 16 hours of specialty-related continuing education.

To you, the homeowner, the benefits of working with a contractor who hires NATE-certified technicians include:

  • Greater energy efficiency and lower operating costs.
  • Safe operation and increased peace of mind.
  • Service and installation done right  – the first time.
  • Fast service procedures, efficient work habits.
  • Greater indoor comfort from equipment running at optimum performance.
  • Advice and guidance from a trained, experienced source.
