Heat transfer is what an air conditioner’s all about, and your A/C coils are where it all happens. What makes your home cool is the fact that the evaporator coil indoors absorbs heat energy from the house, transfers it to circulating refrigerant, and the condenser coil outdoors disperses it into the air. A main factor impacting the efficiency of A/C coils is dust and dirt. Situated inside your ductwork, the evaporator coil is a magnet for all the airborne particulates circulating in household air. Outdoors, the condenser coil accumulates dirt, leaves, grass clippings and other debris.
Dirty A/C coils cost you money as energy consumption increases by as much as one-third as the system runs longer to achieve thermostat settings. Decreased airflow resulting from plugged coil passages may also cause ice to form, as well as encourage mold growth. A/C coils, particularly the indoor evaporator, are not easily accessible to the average homeowner. However, here’s what’s involved in a professional coil cleaning performed by a qualified HVAC technician:
Evaporator coil. Open the sealed coil compartment and clean the upstream and downstream coil surfaces with cleaning solutions designed for this purpose. The technician will use a pump sprayer to inject cleaners deep into small coil passageways. Where dirt and grime contamination are excessive, steam cleaning may be utilized. If evidence of mold is noted, approved biocides are applied to neutralize it. The coil drip pan also will be cleaned and the condensate drain system verified.
Condenser coil. Weeds or other vegetation encroaching on the coil vents will be cut back. Leaves and grass sucked into the enclosure by the coil fan will be removed. Coil surfaces will be treated with cleaner from a pump sprayer, then flushed with water directed from the inside out to clear passageways. If required, steam cleaning may be used. Bent coil fins will be straightened.
