Know More About Your Air Filter and Reap the Benefits

Know More About Your Air Filter and Reap the BenefitsThe entire quantity of air inside your home passes through your HVAC air filter five to seven times every day. While it’s one of the most inexpensive system components, the air filter is critical for healthy indoor air quality as well as cooling and heating performance and energy efficiency. Fortunately, you’re not on your own when choosing the best air filter for your needs. Research by the HVAC industry has standardized filter specifications, and ample data is available at the consumer level. Here are some of the main points:

  • Air filters are rated by the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) system. MERV ratings for residential filters range from 1 to 16, with the lowest number being the least efficient. However, a higher MERV number is not always better. As a filter becomes more efficient at removing the tiniest airborne particulates, it also increasingly restricts system airflow, a major cause of shortfalls in energy efficiency and performance. In most residential applications, filters with a MERV rating between 8 and 12 represent the upper limit for a balance between efficiency and adequate airflow.
  • Manufacturer’s filter change recommendations often specify 90-day intervals. Most HVAC field techs suggest monthly filter changes for optimum air quality and energy savings and to protect system components. You don’t need a specialist – your HVAC contractor will be happy to show you how to change your filter yourself.
  • HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filters are utilized in hospitals and other medical environments. These filters exceed the standard MERV scale and are capable of removing 98 percent of airborne particulates down to a size of 0.3 microns. For individuals susceptible to allergic reactions from microscopic dust or airborne microorganisms like mold spores, HEPA filters may provide added protection. However, the airflow restriction imposed by HEPA filtration requires special installation in a bypass duct that draws air out of your  ductwork, conveys it through the HEPA filter media, then loops it back into the main duct.
