Improve Home Comfort With the Power of a Zoning System

When you’re thinking about ways to improve home comfort, it’s important to remember that a single temperature setting usually doesn’t keep the whole house happy. Under one roof, a home may contain several climate zones. In most cases, it also contains occupants with diverse preferences for heating and cooling. Someone on an upper level that gets lots of sun is too warm. Others in a ground-floor den at the rear of the home complain that it’s chilly. Much of this temperature diversity is a function of floor plan and design. Features such as cathedral ceilings, expansive windows, lofts and add-on rooms all impose different temperature requirements that can’t be accommodated by a one-zone, single-thermostat heating and cooling system.

A zoning system improves home comfort without the necessity of adding additional furnaces or air conditioners. Consisting of a series of motorized dampers installed inside the ductwork and linked to a central controller, the system divides the home into two or more independent temperature zones.  Each is controlled by a dedicated thermostat installed in that zone. When the thermostat signals for heating or cooling, the central controller closes the dampers to other zones and allows conditioned air to flow only to the zone calling for it. Should other thermostats signal for heating or cooling, too, the controller opens the dampers to those zones, as well. As each zone independently reaches its thermostat setting, the controller sequentially closes the dampers, stopping the flow of conditioned air to that zone.

Beyond the question of how to improve home comfort, a zoning system also resolves other issues common to a one-zone home. Energy consumption is reduced because you’re often heating and cooling smaller portions of the home and only when those specific areas require it. Wear and tear on furnace and air conditioner components is also lessened because you aren’t overcooling or overheating rooms.
