Using Your Ceiling Fans Year-Round For Home Comfort And Energy Savings

Using Your Ceiling Fans Year-Round For Home Comfort And Energy SavingsUsing your ceiling fans in both summer and winter will boost the performance of your HVAC system, reduce the amount you pay for seasonal comfort, and help keep you and your family warmer or cooler, as appropriate, without needing to change your home’s temperature at the thermostat.

  • In the summer, ceiling fans offer two significant functions. First, with their airflow directed downward, they generate a breeze that cools you when it flows across you. This downdraft cools you off much like an outdoor breeze would do, though it must make direct contact with your body to do so. Second, they improve overall air circulation and help move cool air that may have settled near the floor. By keeping more cool air moving through your home, your comfort level will be improved. In general, a room where a ceiling fan is being used will feel about four degrees cooler than a room without a fan.
  • During the winter, the airflow from your ceiling fan should be directed upward. The fan should have a switch that reverses the direction of the blades to clockwise for supplemental heating. Warm air from your heating system rises and gathers near your ceiling, so the air currents from the ceiling fan will disperse that warm air, blowing it down the walls and toward the lower part of the room. As the warm air rises again, it provides more even heating and once again has the chance to warm the room and its occupants.

Ceiling fans are an economical way to supplement the performance of your home heating and cooling systems. They cost very little to operate, using about the same amount of electricity as a 100-watt light bulb. Because they improve heating and cooling levels, you can turn your furnace or air conditioner down, saving money while maintaining an acceptable level of indoor comfort.
