The Mini Split: All The Advantages Of A Heat Pump, And Then Some

The Mini Split: All The Advantages Of A Heat Pump, And Then SomeIf you’re constructing a new home in the Terre Haute area and installing a new heat pump or energy-efficient air conditioner, a ductless mini-split system may save you money both during construction and for many years to come. A ductless mini-split system is an excellent solution both for new construction and for older homes that don’t already have ducts installed. Since these systems don’t require ductwork, they can save you money on installation. However, they also increase your home’s energy efficiency and savings.

In most HVAC systems, air is moved to each room in the house through a series of ducts. While well-insulated and sealed ducts are reasonably efficient, loss of heat and coolness do occur as the air travels to its destination.

A ductless mini-split system, on the other hand, bypasses ducts altogether. It is made up of an outdoor unit containing the compressor and condenser, and an indoor unit containing an evaporator and fan. The indoor and outdoor units on a mini-split are connected by a conduit that delivers electricity and removes condensation. Without the need for ductwork, the indoor unit can be installed almost anywhere on the wall or ceiling as long as it is within 50 feet of the outdoor unit.

One of the ways mini-splits save money is that they heat and cool in zones. Each indoor unit cools one room or area, allowing you to shut off parts of the house that aren’t being used and saving the energy that would be used to heat or cool them.

When attached to a heat pump, mini splits can save you even more money. A heat pump is already energy efficient because it uses the heat energy in the air or ground to heat or cool rather than generating new heat. Mini-split systems add to this efficiency by eliminating the heat or cooling loss typically experienced with ductwork. Your HVAC system has to work less to keep your house at the temperature you choose, and that results in long-term savings on your utility bills.
