Upgrading To A Heat Pump Is A Wise Investment–Especially If Your Existing HVAC Equipment Is About To Expire

Upgrading To A Heat Pump Is A Wise Investment--Especially If Your Existing HVAC Equipment Is About To ExpireEven though winter temperatures can dip pretty low, we don’t live anywhere near the arctic. Because of our relatively mild weather, air-source heat pumps can be the perfect home heating and cooling solution in the Terre Haute area. Heat pumps capitalize on the energy produced naturally — and for free — based on the laws of thermodynamics. Therefore, you can enjoy savings of as much as 60 percent on your energy bills compared to when you use older, less-efficient heating and cooling equipment.

There are two main components to an air-source heat pump: the outdoor and the indoor heat exchangers. Here’s a quick look at how both operate to cool and heat your home:

  • During the warm months, the indoor heat exchanger’s configuration of coils that are filled with liquid refrigerant cool your home. The refrigerant grabs the heat from the warm inside air your home that the air handler then moves across the coils, and cools it. The air handler then circulates the cooled air back into your rooms. The heated refrigerant now flows to the outside heat exchanger. Once there, the refrigerant releases its heat, and condenses back to a liquid form. Then the cycle starts again.
  • In the winter, the process basically is reversed. A reversing valve changes the flow of refrigerant. The outdoor heat exchanger sucks the heat out of the air. Heat can be pulled from air even when temperatures dip to 15 degrees. This ambient heat boils the refrigerant, causing it to evaporate. The heated refrigerant flows to the indoor heat exchanger to release its heat and warm the air within your home. The air handler circulates this warm air.
