Homes sometimes have areas that are hard to heat and cool. Modern designs offer elegant living spaces and floor plans, but the architecture is not always conducive to good air distribution. Often, additions added to the home at a distant end of the dwelling have had no duct extension. This adds square footage that strains the capabilities of the home comfort equipment. Ductless mini splits are the perfect answer to this or other situations that make rooms or areas less comfortable than others.
Ductless Mini Splits Defined
Ductless mini splits are essentially small heat pumps or air conditioners. They are called mini splits because one part of the unit is located outside while the other is inside. The outside section houses the compressor and condenser. The inside section is generally mounted on the wall or ceiling and contains the air handler or blower. When the system operates, the power section outside generates the heating or cooling and the inside component distributes the air. They are ductless, self-contained and perfect for awkward heating and cooling situations.
Mini Split Advantages
In addition to generating great, low-cost comfort, these systems have additional advantages:
- Compactness: The outdoor section is small. It can be hidden behind landscaping such as shrubs or moved as far away as 50 feet from the inside unit.
- Easy installation: A small 3-inch breach through the exterior wall is used to connect the sections. Refrigerant tubing, power cord, drainage and suction tubing connect the two. The inside air handler is mounted into the wall or ceiling or can be equipped with a stand-alone floor unit.
- Multi-room capabilities: The outdoor compressor can be linked with up to four blower units. Each can have its own thermostat that can be controlled independently and used in separate rooms.
Ductless mini splits are the solution to virtually any heating and cooling issue from additions, to home offices to bonus rooms to garage apartments.
