Heat-Pump Performance Enhanced By Using These 3 Tips

Heat-Pump Performance Enhanced By Using These 3 TipsAs temperatures keep dropping in the Terre Haute area, heat-pump performance becomes even more important. Not only do you want to save money on energy bills, but it’s nice to keep your home warm and toasty on these cold winter days.

The first step to maintaining good heat-pump performance is annual maintenance service. The best way to ensure that you get the service you need before every heating season is to invest in a planned service agreement. When your technician comes to do a tuneup, they will ensure that the following three factors are accounted for:

  • Maintain good airflow: If enough heated air doesn’t reach your living spaces, you won’t be comfortable. If your heat pump has to work extra hard to do it, your energy bills will increase. Maintaining good airflow helps keep you comfortable while keeping costs down. Your technician can modify the fan speed and clean the evaporator coil to optimize airflow.
  • Seal and insulate ducts: Even if your heat pump is operating efficiently and you have good airflow from the unit, if you have leaky ducts your heat-pump performance will suffer. Sealing leaks in between connections, replacing flexible ductwork and insulating ducts in unconditioned spaces can help you save on monthly energy costs and improve the performance of your heat pump.
  • Ensure proper refrigeration charge: It’s obvious that refrigerant is needed when your heat pump is in cooling mode, but it is also important for proper operation in heating mode. Having too much or too little refrigerant can impact efficiency. Your technician should check the charge and look for leaks every time they perform routine maintenance.

Remember, you should have your heat pump serviced twice a year — once before the beginning of the heating season, and again before the cooling season starts.
