Although you should feel safe and comfortable in your own house, it is important to know that many homes suffer from poor indoor air quality. Your indoor air quality is impacted by five common sources:
- Heating equipment and other appliances can produce carbon monoxide.
- Household chemicals and cleaning products can release fumes and vapors.
- Home furnishings, carpets and draperies can emit volatile organic compounds.
- Radon may accumulate in your basement.
- Pesticides used either in your home or outside in the lawn or garden can build up in your home.
Air quality testing can help you determine what types of chemicals may be a problem in your home so you can take measures to avoid further exposure. The most common tests are for radon and carbon monoxide. If radon is found, you should install a detector that will alert you to high levels. If you have fuel-burning appliances such as a furnace, gas stove or gas fireplace, you should install carbon monoxide detectors in the sleeping areas of your home.
After you have determined the causes of your indoor air quality problems and installed detectors to protect your family, the next step is removing the sources of contaminants. Store chemicals outside your living spaces, don’t smoke indoors and remove shoes when you come in the house. In cases where you cannot remove the source itself, your HVAC system for example, you can remove the contaminants with solutions like whole-house air purifiers and ventilation systems.
Extreme humidity or dryness can also increase contaminants such as mold, bacteria, mildew and fungus. If you have any of these problems, a whole-house humidity control system can help reduce their growth and make your home more comfortable.

In that role, Ethan has brought a renewed enthusiasm for customer care, integrity, value, and service to Paitson Bros. Heating & Air Conditioning.
Ethan enjoys singing and was a member of the Purdue Varsity Glee Club. He also enjoys playing and coaching soccer, spending time with his family and two young boys, and volunteering his time and resources with his church, Terre Haute First Baptist Church, which he has attended from a very young age.
