Is Duct Efficiency Bringing The Overall Efficiency Of Your Home Down?

The duct efficiency in your home can have a large impact on the numbers you see on your energy bill each month. Problems in the duct system can lead to wasted energy and higher energy costs. One of the best ways to improve energy savings in your home is to increase the efficiency of your duct system. Use a multistep approach to increase your duct efficiency and save money this winter:

  • Inspect your duct system for any signs of faulty connections between duct sections, kinks in the duct lines or ducts blowing air into unwanted areas, such as underneath your home. Repair these issues by straightening out kinks, adding ductwork where necessary and sealing loose connections with mastic.
  • Search for leaks and holes along the duct lines. Seal the leaks with foil tape or mastic. Replace fabric duct tape with foil tape.
  • Inspect your ducts insulation. All ductwork located outside of insulated areas, such as in the crawlspace of your home, should have additional insulation around the duct lines. Fiberglass or rigid foam board insulation will provide maximum protection. In general, the thicker the insulation, the better it will retain heat or cold inside the ducts.
  • Remove any blocks around the vents leading in or out of the rooms in your home. Blocking a vent causes the air to blow back into the ducts, reducing the efficiency of the unit and constricting air flow.
  • Check the connection between the duct lines and your heating and cooling equipment. If the seal between the ductwork and equipment is loose, you may be loosing energy before it even enters the ductwork of your home. Seal the joint with foil tape and mastic.
  • Replace air filters every one to three months. Dirty air filters restrict air flow and reduce the duct efficiency in your home.
