Polluted indoor air can cause or contribute to a number of health problems, including allergy symptoms, asthma and other respiratory ailments.
Here are a few strategies for improving the indoor air quality in your home:
- Eliminate the source of the problem. While some pollution makes its way in from the outdoors, some indoor air pollution comes from indoor sources. Those might include gas stoves, which can be adjusted to produce fewer emissions, or older small appliances, which can contain asbestos. If you suspect your indoor air quality is poor, take a good look around for possible contributors.
- Use an air purification device to remove particles such as dust, dander, pollen and mold spores from your indoor air. Air cleaners are available in a range of shapes and sizes, from small units that serve just one room to whole-house systems. Electronically charged collection plates or units that require HEPA filters do a good job at removing odors and even the smallest of particles. Whole-house systems, such as those incorporating germicidal lights, work silently and invisibly.
- Let the fresh air inside. Pollution and pollen levels are usually lower in the evenings in Terre Haute. Consider opening your windows for 30 minutes in the evening to allow circulation of fresh air into your home, or talk to an HVAC professional about upgrading your home’s ventilation system.
- Change your air filters faithfully. They should be checked for buildup monthly and replaced or washed, depending on the type of filter, when they’re dirty — at least every three months. They should be changed more often during your heating and cooling equipment’s high-use periods and during high-pollen season.
- Run the fans in your bathrooms and kitchen. This should exhaust contaminants outdoors.
- Vacuum regularly. Clean your floors every couple of days with a vacuum that uses a HEPA filter. This removes pollen, dander and other irritating particles from your air.
