Prepare For Winter With These Energy-Saving Tips

Winter is just around the corner here in Terre Haute, and it is the perfect time to start thinking about winterizing your home. Putting a little effort into preparing your home for the season can pay off by providing substantial energy savings and improving the warmth and comfort of your living space.

Prepare For Winter With These Energy-Saving Tips, Terre Haute IndianaUse the following suggestions to fortify your home against the icy winter weather.

  • Keep the cold air out and warm air in. Air leaks are one of the leading causes of heat loss in homes. Common problem areas for leaks are around windows and doors, around pipes, wires or ducts that connect to the outdoors and in basements and attics. Use caulk to seal narrow spaces and spray foam to close up any larger openings
  • Insulate against the cold. Warm air rises which unfortunately means that if your attic is not adequately insulated, it can continue rising right up and out of your home. Rather than wasting money heating the outdoors, check to see if you have adequate insulation. An easy way to tell is to look at the floor rafters in your attic. If the level of the insulation is even with or lower than the top of the rafters, you need to add more. Beefing up insulation levels in this one area alone can lead to substantial energy savings.
  • Give your heating system a tune-up. Scheduling a fall service inspection for your furnace is a smart move. During the inspection a trained technician will perform a number of maintenance tasks including cleaning your system, checking for potential problems and performing minor repairs.  These inspections are inexpensive and can easily pay for themselves through energy savings and improved efficiency.
