Maintenance For Heat Pumps Won’t Overwhelm You: Here’s The Basics

If heat pumps are properly maintained, they will provide many years of efficient heating and cooling. Fortunately, maintenance for heat pumps is not difficult or expensive. By following some simple maintenance procedures yourself and getting professional service at least annually, your heat pump will operate up to 25% more efficiently than a system that is poorly maintained. Good maintenance will also extend the useful life of your equipment.

In order to run efficiently, heat pumps needs adequate air flow, ductwork that does not leak and the correct level of refrigerant. You can do several things yourself to keep your system running efficiently. Be sure to keep safety in mind and call a professional if you are not sure what you are doing.

  • Change or clean the filter regularly to prevent dirt buildup that restricts air flow.
  • Clean the blower fan blades if dust builds up on them.
  • Keep weeds and grass from growing up around your outdoor unit.
  • Keep debris out of your outdoor unit housing and clean coils in the unit if they accumulate dirt.
  • Don’t block registers with furniture. If any rooms don’t have return air ducts, be sure doors are kept open so air can flow freely to rooms that have them.
  • Clean registers and straighten bent fins so air flow is not restricted.

You should have a professional heating and air conditioning technician inspect and tune up your heat pump system at least once per year. Your technician will:

  • Inspect the entire system for dirt buildup or other blockages that restrict air flow.
  • Measure air flow to be sure it is adequate and balanced.
  • Repair leaks in the ductwork.
  • Check the refrigerant level and adjust as needed.
  • Lubricate motors, check belts and electrical connections.
  • Check for correct operation of the electrical system.
  • Test the thermostat for proper operation.
