Worried About Summer Allergy Season? Here’s How To Upgrade Your Indoor Air Quality

Summer brings warm days, vacations, the greening of nature and air that is saturated with allergens. Short of wearing a mask everywhere to filter out particles, what can we do? Well, there’s a few things we can do to reduce our exposure when going on trips to work, shopping, to the grocery store and on vacation.

On the Road Tips

  • Use the vehicle air conditioning to keep comfortable. Open windows allow the infiltration of millions of allergens into the car.
  • Choose motel or hotels that offer “pure” rooms. Although these are higher, steps are taken to ensure fewer allergens and better indoor air quality.
  • Park in garages or other sheltered areas.
  • Make sure your room is away from pools, saunas and other high moisture areas that may breed dust mites and mold growth.
  • Reduce your exposure at every opportunity. Combine trips made outside whenever possible.

Creating situations that reduce both your outdoor and indoor exposure to allergens reduces your chances for allergic reactions.

Things To Do At Home

There are things you can do at home to make it a haven away from pollen. Indoor air quality can be improved by doing a few extras.

  • Pets — When you let pets outside, wipe them off with a damp cloth or brush them before bringing them indoors. Keep them off of bedding.
  • Doormats — Pollen settles to the ground. It attaches to shoes when we’re outdoors. Using mats reduces the amount that comes inside.
  • Carpet — Vacuum carpets and rugs regularly. Pollen and other contaminants in carpeting flow back into the air with each step we take.
  • Room or Whole-House Air Cleaners — Air cleaners are a good method of trapping pollutants and improving a home’s indoor air quality. Check the air delivery rates of either. The higher the number, the more effective the device will be.
  • Filters — Keep a clean filter in your air conditioning system.
